3 Secrets to Eating Healthy as a Busy Mom

Healthy eating on the go can be simplified with a few quick tips. Learn the secrets from a busy working mom of 3!

My life is exciting, chaotic, and loud–very loud! I jumped into motherhood head first, having three children in four years.   There are days, I have to admit, that I’m envious of those who save time by grabbing take out or zipping in the drive-thru, but eating healthy takes commitment–every meal, every snack, and every day.  It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, it’s become second nature to me. Now I want to share my secrets with you!

Secret #1: Be your squad leader!

My oldest boy is five. He’s so sweet and even more observant. That little guy watches each and every move I make, and you can bet he’s watching the food choices I make too.

Begin incorporating your kids and teaching them about healthy choices. Children make for the best accountability because they aren’t afraid to call you out (not to be rude) because they’re just so darn observant.

I know that my kids look up to me and they are learning from my eating habits. Having a loving relationship with healthy foods sets an example for our children. Of course, nobody is perfect and we all want to indulge at a party, but we’ll get to that at another time!

Start today by discussing your healthy eating goals with your kids and ask them to join you.

Secret #2: Be prepared, be very prepared!

Why is fast food so popular? Because it’s quick and convenient! You can make healthy food the same way with snack prep. Yes, it takes a little extra planning but I’ve learned to incorporate this into my lifestyle and now it’s just a way of life. This will prevent you from running in the gas station for that candy bar.

So what can you pack?  I pack all kinds of fruits that won’t quickly perish, including:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Oranges
  • Bananas

You can also cut up fresh veggies, including:

  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Red peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower

The list goes on!

I’ve found awesome travel size packs of hummus to dip your veggies in if you need a little more flavor. Some of my favorite dried snacks are raw cashews or almonds. I dry roast mine for about 10 minutes at 250 degrees, which enhances the flavor.

Secret #3: Drink healthy!

Foods are not the only important thing to be cognizant of when you’re on the go. What we drink can be a huge downfall for many of us and can certainly lead to that awful sugar high.

Green juices are all the craze but many contain hidden fruit juices from concentrate so reading labels is a MUST! Make water your first option and if you’re craving some flavor find a nutritious powder to add in!

Personally, I love the feeling I get after nourishing my body. The best time for you to start is right now, so jump all in. I promise you will love the healthy YOU!
